A higher pH lifts the hair cuticle, so this version reaches further into coarse and coily strands than pressed castor does. Both versions start as castor seeds and both run to around 90 percent ricinoleic acid. The process is what separates them. Pressing raw seeds gives you pale, near-neutral castor oil. Roasting and boiling them leaves ash in the oil, which darkens it and raises the pH. That alkalinity lifts the hair cuticle, so the Jamaican version penetrates coarse and coily hair further, and it also means using it two or three times a week instead of daily. Fine or chemically treated hair usually does better with the pressed kind.
