Cold-pressed, unrefined castor oil in glass, at 16 or 32 fl oz. Around 90 percent of it is ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid almost no other plant oil carries, and that's what makes castor thick, tacky and good at staying where you put it. Use it on scalp, brows, cuticles, cracked heels and oil packs. USDA certified organic, hexane-free, with nothing else in the bottle.

Castor oil is unusual at the molecular level. Roughly 90 percent of it is ricinoleic acid, and no other common plant oil is dominated by a single fatty acid like that. Ricinoleic acid carries a hydroxyl group the others lack, which is what makes castor thick, tacky and drawn to water. Those three properties are the whole product. The thickness keeps it on a brow or a nail bed instead of running off. The tackiness forms a film that slows water loss from the skin underneath. The affinity for water pulls moisture toward the surface rather than sealing a dry patch under a barrier. That's also why castor is harder to use than a light oil. Straight, it sits heavy on hair and takes two shampoos to clear, so most people cut it with something lighter. One more thing worth knowing if you're deciding between the two sizes: castor resists oxidation better than most seed oils, and a sealed bottle holds for years. On the scalp, mix it half and half with a lighter oil, part your hair, work it in and leave it an hour before you shampoo. Twice a week. On brows and lashes, use a clean spoolie at night. Expect to shampoo twice for the first few applications, until you learn how little you need.
